    Ross MK II beginning the restoration - looking for parts

    Hello all,

    Just picked up my first Ross rifle MKII 3* of the American import batch. It was lovingly sporterized to about 24 inch barrel and retains the original stock to about 3 inches past the lower band. It is missing the sight hood, screws, and the magazine cutoff. Does anyone have any extras lying around? I've also debated trying to make a Ross tanker carbine out of it (not for forgery sake, I just prefer the look of military rifles) and I see parts are sometimes sourcable here. Does anyone have a pic of the tanker Ross? I will post pics once it is back together ( first cleaning). Thanks!

    As for a "Tanker", I have to ask why in the first place? When you can make it correct looking.

    Thanks for the reply! Like I said, debating. I figured it might be easier to go with since my barrel has been cut down. From what I understand, 30 inch barrels are hard to come by that fit the MkII action. That thread you posted was what brought me here in the first place and I have messaged flyingpig to see what he has available. I will reach out to the others too. Perhaps making her look original may be the better option. Thanks!

    The barrel on your Mk II was 28". The barrels on the Mk II** and Mk III are 30 1/2". Full length barrels do pop up and those barrels are pretty easy to change. You are likely referring to the Trial Carbine when you say "Tanker". The Trial Carbine was a modified Mk II** with a 26" barrel. The Mk II** has much the same heavier barrel profile and length as the Mk III. The barrel on your Mk II has a much lighter profile. There is a picture of the Trial Carbine in plate 122A on pg 175 of The Ross Rifle Story.

    I could see changing a barrel to exactly the same as you have but the markings on the stock are priceless...then you have a shooter. Now on the other hand there have been several cases here of extending the cut off front and then you keep those markings. Then you have it as original length and marks...

    If I were to get a longer barrel, I would try to extend the forestock with some walnut. I have no intention of ditching the current stock. As I said, whomever sporterized this rifle did so lovingly and was kind enough to leave the stock cartouches. A more civilized bubba than I am used to... I think with the sight hood, it will almost look great as is. It's a great shooter too!

    "...the tanker Ross?..." Carbine, not Tanker. No such thing as a 'tank' until 1915/16. The "Tanker M1icon Rifle" was experimental too.
    You're going to have hunt to find parts for a rifle that hasn't been made for 100 years. And never Stateside. Gunparts lists a few. Very few and no stocks.
    "...whoever sporterized this rifle..." You sure it's not one of the commercial Ross'?
