Luger High Angle Jam
I bought my first Luger at a gun show on Saturday, just before Irene came through. It is a DWM 1917 with all matching numbers, including the magazine and grips. It is about 80% finish and I am guessing it is a WW 1 bring back, although I have no evidence to prove that.
Once the weather had cleared I took it to the range on Tuesday. Accuracy was excellent, but I am experiencing high angle jams. On a full magazine I would get the first shot off and the next round will jam with the bullet completely missing the chamber. I would pull back the toggle and shake that round out and chamber the next one. This would repeat for the first several round. In the end I will have 3 or 4 rounds on the bench. I could then load these back into the mag and they would all fire normally.
My experience with Browning type actions is that a high angle jam is usually caused by a week magazine spring that can't raise the next round quickly enough to be caught be the slide, but I don't know if this applies to a Luger action. Also the magazine spring seems to be pretty strong. I also recall reading that a Luger tends to be a bit picky about ammo. I am using 124 grain FMJ Remington bullets over 8.2 grains of AA 7.
Any suggestions or recommendations?
thanks
Howard

A quick look at the Accurate web page shows you are 3/10th over a max charge for a 124 gr bullet. You probably have an over speed condition of the toggle. See what happens when you reduce your load.

Possibly the mag lips are a bit wide at the front. I know Luger can be picky with it's mags. Try tweaking the front in a bit.

I was going by the Sierra manual which shows 7.5 - 8.7 and the Speer manual that shows 8.1 - 9.00, but Accurate makes the powder so I can try cranking it down and try again.

Original load was an 8 gram 123.5 grain truncated cone FMJ at a Vel of 1032 to 1095. Come close to that and it should cycle correctly. An over speed will cause bounce back of the toggle making feed problems. The problems look just like wimp load problems. A bit of other info. In my personal P08s and what I tell customers. Replace all the springs with a Wulff P08 spring kit. Grease the original springs and put them in a bag with the pistols maker and Ser number. Here is some good history if you are interested.

You can´t go far wrong if you get a new Luger (P08) spring set from Wolf. And try it with a new Mecgar mag (they seem to work best).

You indicated that the magazine was also correctly numbered to the pistol. If so, don't try tweaking that one.

Yes. It doesn't appear to be a "user servicable part". I ordered a Mecgar mag from Midway.

I missed that part Johnny. Most of the time around here they have a mixed number mag. I would love to hear how the Meggar works. Their other mags are glowing.
