    Sling goo?

Just got my first Japaneseicon rifle, Type 99 Ariska, with chrysanthemum, bolt dust shield, perfect chrome lined barrel, mismatched bolt, monpod, stock furniture is excellent, intact aircraft/ladder type rear sight, and plastic/rubber type sling with unit symbols painted on it. The sling has organge/red goo coming out of it. My question would be, is this deterioration, or someone trying to repair the aging sling? Will post a pic when I get home from work tonight. Thanks.

    Michael

Probably the old rubber as it breaks down.

    Sling Goo

I have had several leather slings produce this type of sushi juice to include an original sling on a swedish mauser and an 03' springfield. I wiped them down with a dry towel and rubbed in vaseline just like I use to do with my baseball glove. They turned out very well.

I found an old rubber glove in the car warehouse yesterday that's breaking down in a similar fashion. Which reminded me of this thread.

Is the rubber soft, or hard after it breaks down?

Yes. The remnants are hard, but the "goo" is evil sticky soft until it also turns into "glass".
