The German Assault Rifle 1935-1945
.
Well, I picked up another goodie at my favorite used book store.
This one is "The German Assault Rifle 1935-1945", by Peter R. Senich.
Senich is well recognized as an expert and military historian, and has written several books on Sniping weapons systems.
This 313 page book covers the development of the ancestors of the modern Assault rifle from a WW2 German perspective. It is well written and well illustrated with drawings and photographs, and also German production codes for these rifles.
Chapters
Assault Rifle...The Beginning
The MK 42 Machine Carbine
Hanel Maschinenkarabiner 42(H)
Walther Maschinenkarbiner 42(W)
Vollmer Automatic Carbine
The Machine Pistole Series
Maschinenpistole 43 (MP 43)
Maschinenpistole 43/2 (MP 43/1)
Maschinenpistole 44 (MP 44)
Sturmgewehr 44 (StG 44)
Weapon Parts and Production
Accessory Items
Assault Rifle Developments

The Kurz Patrone
Gewehrgranatgerat--Rifle Grenade Equipment
The Curved Barrel..Der Gebogene Lauf
Falschirmjagergewehr 42 (FG 12)
Telescopic Sights--The Assault Rifles
I found this to be a very informative book. A student or collector of the Assault Rifle persuasion, or a WW2 or German Arms enthusiast would find some of the history and development of these rifles fascinating. Of particular interest is the development of the "short" Assault rifle cartridge, and the reasons for it. The curved barrel adapter for firing around corners or out of a tank hatch is an interesting insight into a problem of firing from concealment.
I bought mine used, but the sticker reads $49.95 for a price.
