Alternate powder for Garand 30-06
I know most peoples loads are either IMR 4895 or H4895, as are my loads. I am looking for alternate powders and recipes that are easy to get. I am currently using the last of my H4895 on 308.
Criteria:
147-150gr projo
Close to mil standard, but can be a little milder. target plinking, but not serious target shooting.
I saw one of 50.gr of 4064. I have a pound of 4064, but not sure how hard more is to get.
I thought I saw something with RL17, but I can't seam to find it. further powders and recipes would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Martin

Been using IMR 4064 for most all my .30 cal loads for years, Garands, everything! Varget is a new fad, it seems.

.30-06 loads for M1 Garands and other military rifles.
Use 150gr Sierra Matchking.
48.0gr IMR-4895 for approx 2,800fps
52.0gr W-748 for approx 2,775fps
46.0gr H-322 for approx 2,740fps
52.0gr IMR-4064 for approx 2,800fps
49.0gr Accurate 2520 for approx 2,795fps
These loads are proven performers in match conditioned Garand rifles, but will also group well in bolt action match and sporter rifles.

52 grains of 4064 is too stiff for me. I would look at 48/49 grains, tops.

You will get 2600 fps (give or take 20 fps) from 47 gr of 4064 with a 168 gr BTHP bullet. This has been a standard load for match use for decades.
There is just no use in going much faster than 2600 fps with the 30/06 if using bullets that weigh between 150, and 180 gr.

You might consider 43 grs. of H335, 45 grs. of AA2520 or 45 grs. of RL-12.
Good luck.

I use Reloader 15 in my Garand. 48grs under a 150gr Lapua really flies. The R15 has the proper burn rate/port pressure for a Garand. Pretty much IMR4895.
