A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. A little TLC and some parts...band is missing and there is no crossbolt in the front cap. Looks like it has seen better days although it might be fine. It could be used, I suppose, as an example of type if nothing else. Don't mean to be harsh as these were great rifles, but incomplete is still incomplete.

Actually, I think all the hard to find parts are there. (I think the front band is the same as the regular middle outer band, but uses a longer clamping screw.)If it doesn't get run up in price, it's a good project.

    Have at it.

Front band is different to middle band, but excellent repro's are available from EFD in Englandicon. I got one for mine and it's pretty well perfect.

Thanks, tbonesmithicon! I never pulled mine off to directly compare them. Or maybe I did and forgot... Now that you mention it- The front's not hinged, is it? Mind's going!

Front band not hinged, and looking at the fore-end, right hand side, at the rear looks like a piece may of been broken at some point and has been cut flush with the cut out for the charger guide.

Am I mistaken somewhere but some MK5's didn't have the front band. There were TWO variants don't forget. The conmverted Mk3 or 3* that was priced up at 18 shillings and the new build that was priced up at 21 shillings. I had the band, one didn't

As I've said many, many times on this forum. We have three original untouched Mk5's PLUS all of the associated paperwork that relates to them but, alas, nobody so far has bothered to come and make a detailed study. Which prompts the question........... just HOW do you know that the rifle you've got is original?

The trouble with visitors as opposed to researchers Bindi is that the visitors look at everything and see nothing but the researchers put their blinkers on and just get stuck in to what they need to see..............

It needs someone to get stuck into the Mk5 files and rifles. That'll put a stop a lot of the previous rubbish.................

To be honest, there could be a complete book about the Mk5 project

Sounds like a great project Peter ...

For those that would lile some additional background on the Mk5 ....

Check the United Kingdom - Milsurp Knowledge Library (click here)

There's an "all correct" one in library along with a 117 picture photo montage...

1924 ShtLE (Short Lee-Enfield) No.1 MkV Rifle (Mfg by RSAF Enfield).

Also, in case some of you guys haven't seen it, there's an outstanding article in the form of a "stickied thread" located in Restorer's Corner Forum (click here).

It's an on-going thread with a detailed description including excellent pics of a complete restoration of a previously sporotortized SMLE No1 MkV, started last June 2010 by member bigduke6. Geoff has done an awesome job with this old girl and for any of you thinking about performing any restorations or rebuilds yourselves, it would make for a really interesting read to follow along through to its completion.

Thanks for sharing the journey and the process with us Geoff… well done …

    Regards,
    Doug
