Swedish Mauser Sling Orientation
I have a Swedish 96 and just got a sling for it with the quick release clip. I know this wasn't original to the rifle in its early days but was used on them later.
The big question is which end does the clip go on?
I took a guess and put it on the bottom inside the large loop so that you could disconnect it and use it as a shooting sling that would fit around your arm.
Did some looking around but couldn't find any definitive answers, more like it was the preference of the shooter but with it being the military, and uniformity an all, there is probably a correct way to do it.

Aragorn, I reckon you got it right.
Mauser 98 family types with a quick release ALL have the quick release at the bottom. Just think it through - if you release the top, the sling falls to the ground, where it gets muddy/trips you up. Release at the bottom leaves the sling hanging on the rifle, clear of the ground. And a bottom quick-release with fixed top loop makes sense for shooting, as you described. The US 1907 sling used on 1903s, Garands, M1917s, and often on British P14s and Mk4s as a replacement for the webbing sling, uses the same principle for shooting. See also Dana Jones/"Crown Jewels"/p.271/41B sniper.

It looks ok that way and functions fine. Never considered it dropping in the mud but that does make sense for keeping it on the bottom too.

Great photos. The bottom one is the way I have mine set up with the exception of the brass button. I think I have that with the flat side toward the stock. The leather is turned correctly but I figured the flat side would be less of a marring threat to the stock than the other smaller but deeper side.

Thanks again, Got one identified. Still at a loss with the sling with the leather laces on both ends and button hooks on each end.
