Gun shows, rifle pits and whoppers
The thread below about uncut op-rods got me thinking of some of the whoppers I have experienced over the years.
1st time in the pits at Camp Perry ( We must have looked Green) this guy starts talking loudly about the dangers of uncut op-rods “ the uncut rod cracked off and the end swung around the rear sight and stuck the shooter right in his eye in to his brain. – they are dangerous”
At a local gun show around the time the Garand Imports were hitting the market. This was before the muzzle gages were around. A dealer at the table was explaining how “all Garand rifles were counter bored at the muzzle”
At the NRA Gunsmith School at RIT 1990 – Fellow student had it set in his mind that there was an advantage to the twist rate and direction of a fluted barrel and the effect it had on accuracy. If there was, the guys at Hart rifle barrel had never heard of it.
