Unless you follow the manual, it's difficult to figure out.

Go the Ruger website and the Mark 1 manual at:

See pages 9 and 10. The key is following the instructions about hammer position and hammer strut. The hammer strut is the do-hicky that hangs down from the hammer. At a certain point you move the safety from safe to fire and pull the trigger while in the middle of installing the mainspring housing. Then it's important to get the hammer strut to line up with the mainspring plunger.

Once you get the hang of it the assembly is quick and painless. Just look at the figures in the manual and your pistol and you will be able to figure it out.
