    Confirming a SC 1903A3 Buttplate

OK, I ordered a replacement buttplate from Sarco for what appears to be a mostly correct May 1943 Smith Corona. Can someone please confirm that this is in fact the correct buttplate, it looks very similar (but a little different?) to the one that's on the rifle.

If it's in fact the correct SC buttplate, what's the best (safest) method of cleaning off the cosmolineicon (or whatever it is).

    Thanks,
    Sean

Yes, you have a Smith-Corona buttplate.

The buttplate may be cleaned using one of many petroleum-based solvents. I recommend odorless mineral spirits. It's safer, less volatile, and less flammable.

    Good Luck!

Thanks John. It was worth the $20 + shipping to make my rifle 100% SC.

SC buttplates are about 10 squares per inch. I second what JB said about the mineral spirits. Looks like that buttplate will match your rifle nicely. You did good!
