1903A4 Scant Stocks

Did any 1903A4s come out of the factory as scants, or were they all field replacements?

Yes they did. They were marked RA / FJA / ordnance wheel (crossed cannon) and had the Remington proof "P" and subinspector markings ahead of trigger guard. A4 scant stocks that have no markings would be replacements or heavily sanded originals. Heavily sanded stocks are self evident.

If I recall correctly, I believe a number appeared on the later M1903A4s, in the 4,990,000 range.

Rick, scant versions of the M1903A1 stock began apearing on A4 production in the Fall of 43, possibly even the late summer. Their use increased towards year's end and thru the middle of 44 when the Z4,nnn,nnn and 4,99n,nnn rifles were assembled.

I would be skeptical of an early 1st block with a scant. The stock could well be "original" just not originall to that rifle. If have interreted Mr. Campvell correctly I believe the first 7,000~ M1903A1 stocks (full PG) came directly from Springfield. Thereafter the needs were fullfilled directly by Remington or subcontractors like Keystone.

Yes, I was aware that the first M1903A4s had Type C stocks and that I knew the last ones had primarily Scants - I admit to not being sure about the "middle" group - the 4,000,000 range.
