    91/30 Mosin Nagant Markings

    Hello from Ontario Canadaicon

I recently purchased another Mosin Nagant at a gunshow and was wondering if you experts could look over some of these markings on my rifle and tell me if they're anything important.. They're probably not nothing special but I was just curious what some of these meant.

I tried to get the pics as clear as possible. Here they are

Also, I wanted to know what the best method would be for cleaning up the stock and refinishing it? It some fine steel wool good enough for taking off the old varnish? SHould i restain it with a urethane or just oil it?

    Thanks

Any [X] or [/] means it was refurbed probably in the Ukrain. Triangle w/arrow is Izhevsk factory and Star w/arrow is Tula factory so your gun has mixed parts like most refurbs. For the rest of the markings some are known and some aren't. Go to this site and read up: 7.62x54r.net

To remove the original shellack finish use denatured alchohol and steel wool. You can totally remove it or even out the finish that way as it dissolves the shellack. I wouldn't refinish the stock as it devalues the rifle. To refinish it use shellack with stain in it like the Russians did and it will look original. It not hard to apply and looks good. Any other finish makes it look "refinished". However, it's your rifle so do anything you want to it.

Leave the original finish alone, if the flaking gets to bad. Refinish it with reddish tone shellac, new shellac will disolve the old and blend it in to preserve most of the original finish. Stay away from sandpaper, steel wool, etc.........

hello there, so what you're telling me is to just shellac over the old stuff and not to worry about taking the old flaked stuff off? Should i do something to the wood to prep it? There's gonna be some oil residue on it from handling/ oiling over the years.. what do you suggest?

    thanks for your reply

You can get garnet colored shellac flake from shellac.net or from Lee Valley. The Russians used de-waxed garnet shellac originally, not stained shellac.

Just apply the new coat over the old coat. Lightly knock back the shine slightly with fine steel wool after the last coat has dried for 24 hrs.

    No prep required.

Shellac is used over oilly wood all the time as a barrier coat before applying varnish. It's designed to handle that.

To make shellac from flake, desolve it in denatured alcohol according to the instructions.
