usmc-nav, post a picture of the stock and handgaurd lined up corectly from the right side. Then post a close up pic of the right rail from the top looking down, were it is cut down. That should help.....Frank

What are the markings on the bottom of the pistol grip? It should have IO if early or RI if later. It may be hard see. But you can usally see enough to tell what it is.

I have had two M1A1 original carbine stocks with those style cheek piece rivets. Look and see if the domed /rounded ends of the rivets have an impression like a star shape on them. The rivets on the two stocks I had did. I could never find any info on thse rivets but have personally seen at least two other stocks beside the ones I had with these rivets. They could be the result of a rebuild. Ray

Ray, You are right they are the result of the rebuild as is the replacement leather cheek piece.

Looks to me like that was a highwood cut down to low wood. It was probably done when it went through a rebuild.
I'm out goose hunting this morning but will try and post a pic of an original OI low wood later and you will see the milling marks I was talking about. Also the line up of the handgaurd to the stock. Still a very nice paratrooper stock.....Frank

usmc-nav, these are the milling marks I was talking about. My camara has a spot on the inside of the lense, but I think you can see the marks. They are small verticle lines. They run from the cut to the recoil plate, also you see the match up of the low wood and handgaurd. Ths is a HI stock. HTH.....Frank

Sure. Post a picture of the top rail of the stock in the area that would have had the high wood removed. We would be looking for evidence of the wood being removed. Craftsmen of those years did excellent work, but it was wartime and they did not try to make it look like the high wood was never there. Cut it off, smooth it a little prevent splinters when handling and throw it on the pile.
