I was told the same thing about the GI model being discontinued by a local dealer and so I called Springfeild Armory and the nice lady on the phone said that the Mil spec 45 is not the 1911 model being discontinued.

Your right the Mil-Spec is not but the G.I. model is no more. I looked at a Mil-Spec at my gun shop. It says in big letters MIL SPEC and the cross cannons on one side also 1911 A1 is also on it too. the finish is parkerized and the wood grips have the Springfield logo and there is no lanyard loop. What I'm saying is it is not your plain Jane G.I. model but would serve that purpose OK. It was $615 and my shop always has the lowest shop prices. Hope this helps. I only wish I hadn't sold my SA GI ultra. I miss that little gun.
Just to add I think it was what they call 1911 Micro?

I know a lot of people don't like them because of where they are made, but look at a Norinco 1911a1 if you run across one. I've had one since the early 90s. It's not picky when it comes to ammo- it will load and shoot just about any 45 acp. ammo. Accuracy is GI like. Other than the 3 dot sights and the lowered ejection port, the Norinco is a pretty good copy of a 1911a1. They are forged and are very reliable. They were only imported for about 3 years before the Clinton ban.

I wanted a GI 1911 clone back then but couldn't afford the Colt 1991 at twice the price, much less an old GI 1911a1 at 3x-4x. The original 1911s were expensive back then too. The Norincos seem to go for about $400-$500 these days. I've throught about trading mine in for a R1 or a RIA, but I don't know that I'd gain anything.

I have the following: Springfield Armory GI .45, Rock Island Arsenal CS compact .45, Colt Govt. Model MKIV .45. Of the three, the Colt is my favorite, but nowadays, quite costly compared to the $399.00 I paid for it back in 1977. The other two are excellent guns though, although lacking the Colt's beautiful finish. Both the RIA and SA are very dependable and accurate. The RIA was only $479.00 at my local range and the SA was slightly more. The SA GI can be found used at very reasonable prices.

I have an older sprinfield compact .45acp and it's not an all around ammo lover by far. It seems to do really well with Reminton .45 Automatic 230g MC L45AP4. Otherwise it dont like the Winchester whitebox 230g fmj. It seems to fail to complete battery on those. It will strip the round, but not completly chamber it. I usually have to bump the slide about every 3rd or fourth shot with th white box. I don't know why that is. I even baught brand new mags, and even tried the ones out of my kimber, didn't make any difference.
I really like the look and feel of that little pistol too, I wish it liked the winchester, it's cheaper around here than the other stuff it seems to like.
