    Extremely helpful stuff, thanks.

But, if you tinker with the trigger, isn't it the case that you might be disqualified at a CMPicon shooting match? Not completely sure how that all works, just wondering.

Utilizing the procedure in the first part of the instructions, removing the parkerized finish from the friction points and proper lubrication would not be as you are allowed improve function "by the careful fitting of issue parts". Stoning the hooks to reduce the pull weight is against the spirit of the rules as that's a NM mod and is probably out. Although I have not seen it in writing anywhere.

A lot of folks don't realize that a NM M1icon, with the exception of the sights, was built by selectively fitting issue parts. Barrels were regular issue barrels that were selected by air gauging, then hand stamped "NM". Gas cylinders were selected for minimum ID. Op rods were checked for straightness and max OD on the piston. They were essentially rifles built to blueprint spec to the minimum side of all the tolerances. As time went by, further improvements were phased in. Glass bedding, unitized front handguard, NM marked op rod, etc.
