Last ditch 99 questions

I have a series 34 which seems to be off maybe you guys can help since I am new to the arisaka.

The buttstock looks to be cut for a metal plate

This is the plate that was attached with modern machine screws.


I thought this series should have a wooden buttplate? The one it came with doesn't cup the stock like the others I've seen. Could someone have added it?

A Series 34 could have either a metal butt plate or a wooden one, BUT, that butt plate doesn't belong on any Type 99 Japanese rifle that I'm aware of. That butt plate was used on early Type 38 rifles and training rifles. Photos of the entire rifle and markings would be helpful to identify it.

That is a type 99 series 34 all right. Stock appears to be a type 99 also with the exception of the butt plate. I can't explain that, not supposed to be like that. It does look to have been made that way.

Is there a source for wood buttplate to buy or should I pick up a type 99 buttplate and try to make it work?

I don't think I would do anything to it at this point. It was probably done by the Japanese. Why I don't know, maybe they had them lying around and used them. It is possible that a soldier did it when he brought it home but I wouldn't do anything.

The problem is, there are a lot of variations to these rifles and just because my book doesn't show it, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I would say it is unusual but not impossible.
