Serial number obstructed by stock and loose bolt
I looked at a 1903 today in the 3 Million serial number range, the last digit of the serial number was covered up by the stock. Anyone seen this before? The stock also had a crudely stamped US Marines crest Eagle/Globe/Anchor on the right side of the stock just below the bolt. It had a 8/44 barrel that looked to be nearly new. It's clearly an o3a3 but with a redfield rear sight.
It was a reparkerized rifle but in poor mechanical shape, the bolt would not lock closed. Someone did a very poor job of polishing the bolt (no serial number on bolt), I am wondering if that created the locking problem.
So I am wondering who made the stock and if the bolt issue can be fixed. I am pretty sure they never came with a redfield rear sight.

I have seen the SN partially obscured by the handguard. Different length handguards were used on the 03 & 03A3, I believe. If yours really is partially obscured by the stock, there is a problem we can only hope to figure out by seeing it. The USMC crest & Redfield sights were undoubtedly the work of Bubba.
I would guess that the bolt issue might be fixable, but would require professional gunsmithing; if the current owner has offered to give it to, it may be worth considering.....
