The 224 E2 Winchester was developed for the Winchester Lightweight Rifle based on a larger M1 carbine action and gas system. The 224E2 could be fired in the AR-15 but the AR-15 cartridge (known as the 222 REM Special) could be fired in the Winchester,

The 222 REM Special became the 5,56mm and 223 Rem
