1911 A1 with a strange (to me) marking

Surfing the Net I've found this pistol with a AS marking on the frame.
The pistol is a battered 1911A1 with a REMRAND slide on a US&S frame, and wondered if by any chance anybody knew about that AS marking.

I always tell my collector mates to put originality at the top of their priority list, originality isn't something that can be restored. I've never seen a 1911 I didn't like.
