I too qualified with the 1200 in 1985 or '86 at Bragg! I was actually excited, as I had a 1200 that my Dad gave me when I turned 13, so this was like a piece of home...only cooler.
My "reward" for being one of the few to volunteer to get qualified, was the opportunity to guard empty tents on Christmas Eve near green ramp!!
Almost forgot about that memory....thanks Brian!

We didn't get to volunteer. Everyone in the line platoons went to the range to get qualified with the 1200's if memory serves. We guarded everything with them. Shells in our pocket of course! One young trooper did make the mistake of loading one while bored and guarding a hanger somewhere on Bragg. You guessed it. He managed to shoot a hole in the roof! I walked a few miles on the fence guarding pov's right across the street from the green ramp for the guys that were deployed on DRF call outs! Happy days.

Having just made E5, I was perturbed to get a range detail and no one else showed up. Two green Lt.s teaching a class for Signal Corps Message Center people on the 12ga. riot/trench shotgun. I watched as they instructed the class on how to single load and fire. Afterwards they offered me a chance to shoot and were dumfounded that I loaded the magazine and ripped five rounds off. I don't remember if they taught how to remove a live round from the barrel. Thank heavens we never had to defend the Panama Canal Zone.
