    Egyptian FN 49

I had been bidding on an Egyptian FN 49. When I asked about the bullet test, the seller said it swallows the bullet. Is this good looking rifle a lost cause?

Not sure what he means by that, any other info like manufacture date stamp?

To check its authenticity the FN49 has the serial number in 3 places, normally four digits, they also love stamping the wood in Arabic numbers:

    1. At the front left side of the receiver just before the handguard.
    2. On the bolt of course
    3. On the left side of the top cover just below the rear sight

IF IN DOUBT PULL OUT always a good adage to adopt!!

If by bullet test you mean put the bullet in the end of the barrel to see how far it goes it, failing th is not good. Either the bore or the muzzle is worn out. Several other things to look for with these. Some importers rebuilt them and used various parts from other rifles. Notably brass buttplates from Britishicon Enfields.

Those rifles from Egypt were mostly burned out barrels because of the corrosive primed ammo and poor maintenance. The outsides vary. If you have to have one try to get a better one in .30 cal and then it'll be more to the point for the US market. Yes, if the muzzle is that eroded, the bullets will come out all directions...parts may be worn out too. I had one that doubled up...fun but not when other guys are watching...
    Regards, Jim

SARCO Inc had new 8x57mm barrels for Egyptian FN 49 and the firing pin was known to cause problems

Save your money and buy either a Luxembourg model in 30-06 or a Argentineicon Navy model in 308, I recently picked up a nice Argentine model and waiting for warmer weather to try it out. And looking at a Lux model as we speak to add to the collection, it sounds as other members stated that the barrel is gone. If you're going to spend good money on one, might as well be the best you can find.
