    A question for Patrick Chadwick

    Attachment 97801

    Patrick,
    These are the barrel markings on an FN Deluxe, serial number 1049X. Can you help me decipher its year of manufacture? Thank you.

    Well, they are all Belgian proof and examiner's marks. A close-up photo would be helpful as I can't quite read them.

    The Star over a capital letter is an examiner's mark, and somewhere there must be a list of the examiners and their periods of office. Unfortunately, this seems to have been treated as a state secret, and I have never found the list for the 19th. and early 20th C. Known marks seem to be all post-1924, and this rifle is probably earlier.

    Produce a better photo for ALL the marks, and I will try to at least narrow down the timeframe.

    So I got on the barrel going top to bottom as the picture is orientated;
    Star over Capital X
    Crown over Capital R
    Stick Figure with rifle at the slope then a line with capital P.V under the line (Thats what it appears to me to look like.)
    Crown ontop of oblong circle with on the inside
    E
    L G (Formating wont let me keep alignment as per picture.)

    On the reinforce on the receiver;
    Star over X
    Stick Figure with rifle at the slope then a line with capital P.V under the line (Thats what it appears to me to look like.)
    Lastly what appears to be a Column ontop of a plinth!

    Anyway hope this helps P.C
