No 4 Mk2 cross bolt size?

    Hi all,
Anyone know the proper length of the No 4 Mk2 cross bolt. I'm trying to find one that fits my rifle, and they seem to be 1&5/8inches, which is considerably too short to fit the forearm on my rifle. Did they come in a variety of sizes? Does anyone have a longer one I could buy?
    Cheers,

    B.

The forearm is probably of Indian manufacture as it has the Ishy screw and is a reddish colour. It also required a lot of trimming to get the nose cap and band on. Perhaps this is the problem?

According to Stratton/Vol.2 P. 102 , the "fore-end reinforcing screw" was 1.65" long, which is a bit longer than 1-5/8" - please check your measurement - but even 1-5/8" ought to allow the slotted nut to be started without trouble. The screw was never altered, so it seems that the oversized fore-end wood is indeed the problem.

That's great thanks. Yes, it seems oversized compared to my other rifles. I had to go to the hardware store to find a 2" bolt.

Constant removal and replacing of that screw and nut caused it to dig deeper and deeper into the fore-end until the nut was bottoming out. We used to have a repair for that by drilling out the hole slightly oversize then insert and glue in a PRE-BORED dowel patch. If you don't pre bore it you'll never get the hole properly aligned at the other end! It is a 4BA screw and nut as I recall. You could just patch the outer ends of the hole to suit. If you have the nut I've got a bolt you can have

Thanks Peter, I think I've got it sorted now. A longer bolt was inserted, which doesn't look exactly the same, but once blued, you barely notice the difference. Being Canadaicon, it's Robertson, not slot head, but that has a local charm at least...
