    One thing that I notice looking at these WWII photos is how much better fed the ETO seemed to have been than the PTO.

    My dad told me that they only got spam and mutton when he was 'in the islands'.

    I'd think the climate was a contributing factor. In the PTO, "real" food spoiled PDQ...

    When you watch the series Pacific which I think is pretty well done on reflecting just how terrible the Island Campaign was for those troops against a fanatical enemy.
