Trade a Jap 99 for a Lee Enfield #5 JC

I have a fellow at work who is very heavy into Jap rifles. He offered a trade for a Type 99 I have, a 1939 Hiroshima arsenal marked w/mum for a near mint Jungle carbine (all correct). I'm leaning towards it, being as how I'm truing to build up commonwealth guns, What do you think-SDH

The deal I was entered didn't work out, oh well, it was worth a try. My 99 is in great shape but does not have a mono pod or cleaning rod. I guess that killed the deal. My uncle was in the 4th Marines and faced the Japanese on three major invasions he wasn't very fond of them, I guess I can say the same about the way I feel about there rifles-SDH

The rifles are actually quite capable.

I don;t have the specifics of YOUR rifle, but many never hada monopod. Cleaning rods can be had on e-bay from time to time. Monopods can also be bought if yours should, indeed, have one.

Got any pics of the rifle & markings? I have a soft spot for 99's. With the right loads they are very respectable.

I'm not sure if the bolt matches (I'm at work right now, so I can't go and check) While I don't dislike the gun, it's not something I'd pay $50.00 a box of ammo to shoot. I would much rather have a nice commonwealth rifle instead, especially a #5 jungle carbine. It all started with a conversation with a fella here at work who likes the Jap stuff and he knows I'm looking for commonwealth stuff. I guess he may have already had something too close to mine to trade. Oh well-SDH

If it's Hiroshima, it's a Toyo Kogyo. 1943 would likely make it 32nd or 33rd series, either full 99 or transitional.

Is the bayonet band capable of accepting the Monopod? If so, it's be 32nd for sure.

Bore on these are chromed, so that's why it's mint TK chromed barrels until mid-way through the 33rd series when they switched completely to making the substitute standard model, often erroneously referred to as a "last ditch 99".
