21 April 20 Garand Picture of the Day

July 14, 1967, photo, National Guardsmen stand at the corner of Springfield Avenue and Mercer Street in Newark, N.J., where four days of deadly violence and looting came to be known as the Newark riots.
There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.

Looks like one of the NG members was actually a recent transfer off active duty in USAREUR.

So many men...armed against civilians. My “uneasiest” feeling since service...
Never liked the idea of the Army inland. Raising my loaded and chambered rifle against civilians really left some bad memories in me. Even if that guy was a real asp””hole, trying to ridicule us in public.
The problem, at least for us, was that in case of real trouble, you knew perfectly well, that you’d be left alone. Uneasy feeling!!!

I had a case of "Aid to the Civil Power", which was taking over penitentiary guard. That was so hard to stomach, they weren't average citizens. Just handling unhappy civilians would have been worse, yes you'd be cut loose.

That's interesting. Do you recon it came off the rack that way or was it fractured by a too-tight nervous grip during a Berlin Shuffle?
