    Israeli 98 Mauser 7.62 x 51 sight issue

Over the years I have had the opportunity to shoot three 98 Mausers of Germanicon war time production or the post war FN contract that were converted by Israel to 7.62 x 51.

Question: Did the 7.92 x 57 to 7.62 x 51 conversion also modify the rear sight for the 7.62 x 51 M80 147gr ball cartridge? All three of the rifles shot very high even when the sight was set on 100 meters. I know that most milsurps shoot high at 100/200 meters since the battle sights are set for 300/400 yds/meters but my result is above the norm. ie With M80 NATO ball 147gr at 200yds-sight on 100-impact 20-22" above point of aim. Maybe the IDF was told to set the sight at 100 and hold on the belt line for 100-400 meters???

As good as the State of Israel is in SA design and production it is hard to believe that they would not modify the rear sight for the new cartridge.

Any informed data on the conversion process or doctrine would be appreciated.
    Thx.

Front sight not correct. Install correct height and shooting high goes away. Had the same problem with my Israeli K98icon 7,62.

Thanks for the input. Wanted opinions before I did the obvious of going with a higher front sight. Be safe!

    UPDATE:
-- Found a 98 "take off barrel" locally that had a higher front sight blade. Installed the higher front sight blade and problem solved. Per usual, had to remove the action screw lock screws to get the proper torque.
-- Note: Trick I use to move front sight blades that mount on a front sight base is a 1" C-clamp. Acts as a poor mans sight pusher. Sometimes a commercial AK/SKS sight tool works. Need to pad the sight so it does not get marred. A sight pusher applies pressure to the blade in the dove tail while beating on the blade with a punch can cause damage to the barrel/sight base if the base is not supported. Have noticed that pushing the sight gives finer controlled adjustment vs tapping the blade with a punch.
Take care and be safe, Steve
