German Luftshutz Helmet, Yard Sale Find

Not super extraordinary. It's been repaired and repainted but for $20, it's a bargain. Liner and strap appear to be original.

Manufacturde by Paul Diener, in Dresden, not sure what year but most likely pre-war or early war based on this being a three piece construction. Marked RL2-38/28.

Yes, I thought they were fireman's helmets? At $20 USD still a steal.

Primarily air defense, civil defense but I believe some fire brigades and other civilian organizations used them. Could be why this one doesn't have a decal.

Always thought how ugly Germanicon helmets were, but thank God they were, otherwise it would have been a different two World Wars, as noone could recognise the enemy easily!!

Must be a Britishicon thing. I could be wrong but I think most people here think the German helmets are "the bomb" Bikers wear them, they fabricated modern biker helmets after them, they are the most sought after by far on the collector market. The US Kevlar helmets are somewhat based off them. They are arguably the most advanced helmets prior to the Kevlar for all round protection. The US helmet wasn't bad and had the advantage of being able to be used as a bucket but for protection was still inferior. I can't figure out why the British went with the Brody for so long. No side or rear protection at all.

One of those for $5, back when I was much younger, started me on this road to collecting. Oh the humanity (and money spent)
