I took a look through GunBroker for you. This carbine is not currently listed there. It was worth a shot.
Good luck on your hunt!

Unless you know who pop sold the thing to it's highly unlikely you'll find a specific Carbine. Especially when NJ thinks the Carbine is evil. The Carbine is considered by NJ to be an "assault rifle" and illegal to possess. It appears the Carbine was declared evil long before 1988 though. Something about race riots in 1967 and Plainfield Machine Co being robbed by rioters.
Spelling and Grammar count!

There used to be a website called USCARBINECAL30M1.com and it actually had a registry where owners voluntarily listed their carbines and their features. I just entered my Underwood and my Inland back in April 2020. I tried to pull it up and check for you but it appears the site is temporarily shut down due to some dispute. If you know which gun dealer handled the transaction, you might get lucky and find that they still have their 1988 records. They may even be willing to contact the person they sold it too and offer to broker a deal to sell it back to you. There are also numerous other registries on the internet and you may get lucky there too. Good luck!

Do you know the date on the barrel by chance?

A member on the CMP has reached out to the uscarbine30cal site on my behalf and was told it may take awhile.
I wish I knew what shop he sold them to. I was thinking if I could find out what shops were in business back then I could start calling them.
And no, I don't have any memory of any of the markings. I don't recall any close up pictures of the rifle either.

"Assault rifle", in quotes.
I bet they don't. Got a link showing they do?

You'd lose that bet. NJ banned M1 Carbines decades ago. Just search New Jersey Administrative Law to see for yourself.

“M1 Carbine type” is specifically listed as a banned weapon under New Jersey law.

Gents-- The M1 Carbine was banned by name in 1995. Any owners at the time were given a 30 day window to register the "assault weapon" for $50.00 if they wished so folks did some did not and squirreled their M1 carbines away or shipped them to another state with visiting rights to the carbine. If the owner passed away and left the registered carbine, it could not be transferred to a living relative in NJ. It could be shipped out of state or turned into the NJSP for destruction. The New Jersey State Police maintains the registry of "assault weapons".
