    FWIW - model 1901 rifle rear-sights often show up on ebay, sometimes with original screws'. The model 1901 sight usually will sell for more than the 1896 sight.

    Good luck R&R! I second that on the 1901 sight. A lot of older weapons were arsenal refurbished, especially coming back from Cuba and the Philippines. The arsenals would install upgrades as a matter of course. If your handguard has the long hole, that is probably what happened to your rifle. The 1901 sight is really nice for target shooting (use the little peep) and in the down position gives you a pretty decent sight picture.
