I do not assume anything about your grandfather. Like the man I mentioned, he apparently served at the front in the Great War, in appalling conditions.

The man I cited was a volunteer no less; who served in the trenches in Franceicon. Did he make up some stories about himself? Apparently so, but that takes nothing away from his service itself, and might reflect mostly the effects of what we now call PTSD.

You yourself mentioned your belief that your grandfather posed as a medic in order to make himself more attractive to the ladies, and even had a painting made showing himself as such. Perhaps he really was a medic, and won his decorations as such, but preferred to thought of as a sniper?

If you think that takes away from his record, I leave that judgment entirely up to you. I suppose if you really want to have the best information you should consult what records may exist.

Since you asked about Italianicon sniper equipment, here are some photos of a scope and a case.

I remembered taking a few pictures at a display after a reinactment in Gorizia.
Among them these two of a Carcano with an optic on.
But I was with people and could not take my time...
I’d bang my head against the wall right now.
