    Johnson Rifle Bayonet Opinions

Any thoughts on the originality of this bayonet? Thanks in advance.

Possibly a difficult question to answer when only a minimalist part of the bayonet is pictured in your post. Why not post pics of the entire bayonet?

As I understand, the reproduction of these bayonets is mostly noticeable on the top portion, not necessarily the blade.

Melvin Johnson did it his own way, didn't he?

Scabbard looks good, bayonet looks brand new. I understand the reason for the question, can't answer it. I would question the condition.

I was thinking a refurbished original but difficult to tell especially when the entire item is not pictured.

To be fair to him, there wasn't really a bunch of designs to take a look at when he came up with his. It's part of what I love about collecting early smokeless powder milsurps, they are all unique as people hadn't figured out what worked best yet.

As for original or not, it looks exactly like the one I had back in the '80s so I can't be sure. Here's one from Oldsmithy.com that's a bit different but markings don't seem to jump out at you. USA

As for the choice of bayonets, the recoiling barrel is the main factor in the spike bayonet. The heavier knife types affected recoiling and therefore function. It's all documented if one were to look. I had them to compare side by side with M1 rifles and would never, as an infantryman...choose a Johnstone rifle.
    Regards, Jim
