    I took it as guys digging a fighting position keeping the rifles out of the dirt. no helmets or equipment hanging off rifles. If there were bodies I would bet the phtog would have included them.

    Isn't it a normal practice if leaving the soldiers weapon as his grave marker that it was made inoperable I.e. bolt removed and ditched!

    I too thought a defensive position with the rifles like that to be A) Easy to reach and bring into action B) Keeping them out of the dirt.
