    "Jungle Carbine" bayonets

I have (literally) fallen heir to about ten WW1-WW2 milsurps, a field in which I am woefully ignorant. Some have bayonets, some do not. There are three Enfields in the lot, a SMLE, a Mk4, and a "Jungle Carbine". I see that there is a vast difference between real and repro bayonets for the latter. How does one tell them apart? Thanks in advance. Most of the stuff will eventually be sold AFTER I've done my homework!! Expect many more questions in the various fora.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. You probably have a No 1 Mk III [SMLE], No 4 Mk I and a No 5 [Jungle]. No 1 has the description on the wrist right hand side, No 4 on the body left side, No 5 left body.

Do a search on the forum for their bayonets, there are quite a few that will fit depending on the No and Mk of the rifle. Photos will help those who will be along shortly to narrow down what fits where.

Photos of the bayonets will also help.

The No.5 bayonet is an easy on to I.D its way shorter than the '07 has a large muzzle ring to fit over the flash hider, has a drop point as well.

Skennertons Commonwealth Bayonet book is a great source but can be pricey, as Daan suggested forums can be the best source of info sometimes they will compare a faker with a real type.

For ID this may help, specific markings on the bayonet dictate price. For price of the generalized bayonet see Phillip Peterson's Price guide. The Standard Catalog of Military Firearms: The collector's Price and Reference Guide. (9th edition, 2020, published by Gun Digest Books). Cost is around $28

Some of the new manufacture bayonets cost more than the original rifle. I have had good luck the quality reproduction models available from a variety of suppliers

Yes, I know - plate's a little full right now! Cleaning up the estate (my wife's Navy vet son who was a hoarder) has been QUITE a chore - not yet finished, by a long shot. Plus, she was in the hospital again, this time for a pacemaker - good news is she's better, but I expect it could be Spring before I can really get into the guns & stuff.

Dick - If you email or send me a PC, I can help with markings and send you documentation on your Britishicon Items.

British stuff use to be my main area of interest before getting interested in Krags.

I hope your Family had a very good Thanksgiving - Chuck

sorry to hear about your family trouble, seems you have been having a rough couple of years. this a good reminder to collectors to hang some kind of tags on their items to indemnify what they are. the ones coming behind us may not know.
