    Need Help

A friend found this percussion musket in his father's closet, wants to know what it is and if it's worth anything. It's way outside my expertise. Can anybody help? It's 57" long but no marks at all are visible anywhere.

More and better pictures are needed before any evaluation can be made. Full length of both sides at least. Muzzle and butt would help too

Any rough guess on value as a wall-hanger in poor condition?

Bob, Is it complete? Does the lock function properly? Search Gunbroker for muskets in similar condition. If I had it I would just blow the white specks off it, mild clean and oil and display it as is. It is probably a Mexican War or Civil War used musket, so quite a conversation piece.

Thank you all, I at least have something to tell him. FWIW, Scott Duff agreed with your opinions, thought it might be worth a couple of hundred as an historic wall hanger.

    Almost certainly an 1842 Springfield

There are most likely markings on the lock plate under the rust, the Springfields tend to be faintly stamped to begin with.

American, but need a full length photo. Call some Civil War site and ask if you can bring it in for examination.
