hitting high at 50 yards

Hello all. Took out a winchester 1895 in 303 british to the range the other day. The rear sight was as low as it could go and it was hitting ~4 inches high at 50 yards with greek HXP.
Anyone know off the top of their head how this would translate at 100 yards - would it be closer so I could "Dot the i" on the black or would it just be further out and 10 - 12 inches high.

If you can, Increase the height of the front sight blade.
At 100 yards you will get approximately 2" reduction (lowering) in POI for every 0.015" increase in height of the front sight.

Try gluing or soldering a higher 'tip' onto the front sight.

My guess is it will be about 6" high at 100 yds.

aaah crap. I wonder if I can replace the front sight blade with a genuine 1895 blade. This is an antique (made 1897) so i want to keep it orginal / correct.

What are you calling "high?" What is the size of your target bull? Could it be designed to hit center of an 8" circle with a 6 o'clock hold, or something similar to that?

Mac702 is probably right, and is it calibrated for .303 Mk.VII or much more likely, one of the earlier marks of .303 with the 215gr. bullet?

If the rifle was indeed made in 1897 & has been in 303 calibre all of its life, without getting modified over time, it will be calibrated for round nose 215gr bullets of the Mk2/6 pattern.

I wouldn't change it Charlie. Load some heavy bullets and see if it's on. If you're going to use the lighter bullets, just learn where it shoots and adjust accordingly.
