    CMP Smith Carona

Traveled to Anniston last week to spend a couple days shooting the CMPicon Talladega Marksmanship Park. Had not planned to purchase a rifle until I saw this lone Smith Carona among 4 Remingtons. looked all correct except for the replacement bolt. Sleeve was marked R and top of handle was B&S with an ordinance bomb (Brown & Sharpe). Could not pass on the rack grade price of $750. ME/TE are 1/3. Closely examined the dark bore and found strong rifling. Best guess the dark bore is why it was a rack grade. Took a chance and had it on the range within an hour. No issues hitting the 9 and 10 ring at 200 yards. Once cleaned after arriving home, the bore was shiny and bright with no pitting, frosting or corrosion. Can anyone give input on what I have for a bolt?

Your rifle is fitted with a bolt made by Brown & Sharpe, a WWII spare parts contractor. The bolt is a replacement and is not original to your rifle. The correct bolt for your rifle would have a curved handle, an "X" stamped atop the handle, and a "1", "2", or "8" stamped underneath the handle. The "X" can frequently look like a "V" when poorly stamped.

You have a splendid rifle. Thanks for sharing! And thanks for your patronage!

    J.B.

    p.s.,

The bolt sleeve/firing pin assembly is from a Remington M'03-A3 and is not original to your rifle.

Many thanks for your review, Mr. Beardicon. Always pleased when those dark bores clean up.

Wow. That is far more than your average rack grade rifle. You did the right thing taking it home for 1/2 price!
