In my opinion they are not rare. Charlie helped me with this very hammer when I first joined this forum. I had the same question because I have a hammer exactly like it in my mixmaster Winchester. I found an extra one after the members found another one for sale and alerted me to it and purchased it as a spare but I don't believe they are rare so to speak. I paid $40 for mine which wasn't even four or five years ago. some members refer to that marking as a dove instead of a flame.hth

Thanks for the reply and information. I couldn't find an example other than some references to a diamond and triangle, but no actual photos.

Yes unfortunately my original thread had pictures of my hammer but was lost during the great picture blackout on this forum. I too described it as a flame, to me it looked like the flame from a Zippo lighter logo, But the other members here that had seen it before described it as a dove logo. If I remember correctly I think I titled my thread asking about it "unidentified mark on a Hammer"

I've got an S'G' Carbine made in 1943 with that hammer. The s/n is 1829338. I think the marking is identical to yours, but have seen a marking that's different - not sure if was fake or not. I don't have access to the computer with pics of mine right now, but hope to later today. The CCC website might help narrow down the dates they were used a bit. My "good buddy" Charlie may be able to help out if he's not still out looking for coyotes. - Bob

Bob, you're set up looks about like mine when I go to the range haha. Got to have my spotters scope because my eyes arent as good as they used to be but instead of a square of carpet, I use towels to lay my firearms on. Sometimes I get looks from other people but it doesn't bother me, I don't want to put any nicks on my milsurps that weren't already there from their past. You can tell just from that picture that you are a very good caretaker of your firearms. That is one beautiful stock on your carbine

Hey Bob, is it easier to get a good site picture with the front sight ears shaved off? Seems like I have read of that modification on several other carbines that have been seen over the years. Seems to me that it would be easier to get on target quickly with the front sight that way
