Mystery Stock and Handguard
I was cleaning out my gun room and came across this stock and handguard. A friend of mine had an Inland M1 that he brought to me for refurbishment. He got the rifle from his grandfather (no military service connection). The metal and operating parts were fine but this stock was trashed. We replaced his stock and now he is up and running again. The trashed stock perplexed me because it appears to have been handmade(??). The wood is rough and I can find no markings on it. The handguard is very different. It is a very fine texture walnut but has no aiming groove. It is absolutely flat. It is marked "IO" on the inside. It is just a mystery to me as to what they are and where they came from. Thanks!

Stock looks like Winchester to me. Not uncommon for W stamping in sling well, to be hard to see or maybe now missing from heavy sanding.
Handguard appears like was sanded down, perhaps to clearance for a scope?

With the butt plate recess cut hand sawed off, you should still be able to see if it was a 3 hole stock like WRA, MU, SC-B or BR-B stocks have. So rule those out.
Seeing just the butt plate single hole would limit it to S-HB, OI, HI, RSG (SG), RSG (S'G'), RSG TO I (TRANSFER), RMC, RMC TO I (TRANSFER), RMC B, QRMC, TRIMBLE FOR NPM, TRIMBLE FOR SG, S-HB, SJ AND LW-B, that I can recall. This provided it's a GI Stock.
Inside detail may reveal more. Also is the barrel channel 3+" or 4+" ?
The late marked 0I just obviously sanded flat. You'll never get in Bubba's mind........ He can't !

Maybe RSG in sling well?
Hard to tell from phone.
RMC B can be ruled out since would be I cut. Right?

Inside of the stock doesn't look too bad but no markings. 4" barrel channel. No markings in the sling well. Only the one hole visible in the end of the buttstock. Looks like maybe an M2 selector switch cut out on the left side and maybe a very very very faint remnant of 2 lines of a stamp on the left side of the stock.

Yeah David,
I was just running off the maker stocks that I had noted from home for a post a while back like this.
I'm not sure about J, JL (?) P-U or HQ.
I should add the M stock is known as the 2nd style M2 stock and has 3 holes with flat bottom, sometimes with a bomb stamp inside by the M. These were the early version of the potbelly with less pronounced belly than the later HI types. I believe they were made by Marlin but have no proof. I've seen the M stock sanded so heavy on the bottom, many mis-take the M as a W and after being sanded flatter must be a WRA.
Shown in 1st pic..
And top one in 2nd picture, bottom one is Fish belly HI
The M will have 3 holes under the buttplate and the over 4-1/8" long frt barrel channel.

Isn't that stock one of those "crummy" ones that were made in Korea? - Kapur or some such wood. I've seen a few of them show up on eBay over the past several months. - Bob
