lithgow 1916 no1 mk3 H
Hi,
This is my first posting here... so bear with me for my mistakes and terrible pictures.
i'm sorry for the focus problems in some of them,
i've an old camera and my skills are not to snuff.
I picked up an interesting Lithgow
no 1 mk3 dated 1916..
it looks to be a jjvco import but it seems to be mostly unscathed and original.
standard mk3, not a mk3*. has cutoff, has been rebarrelled with a heavy barrel,
looks to have been done 3 of 38.
mostly matching except for the rear sight and sight base.
bolt was a casualty of a numrich arms " convert to a .22 kit"
had the bolt in barrel liner in 22 cal and a 22 caliber bolt installed unfortunately,
they didnt keep the original bolt with it.
after removing the liner the bore is gem mint, and i would hazard a guess that the bolt would have been matching when imported.
allkinds of interesting markings on the barrel including the witness marks with the star I thru IV, then MA V thru IX. 5MD, H, etc. stock is also nicely marked as well.
stock and forestock are matching numbered, as well as front handgard.
rear handgard only marked with a G. magazine unnumbered but marked MA.
nosecap matching numbered.
What is the meaning of the HV SC marking directly rear of the sight base?
Serial number is interesting to me as it is 60007.
overall I think it is a fairly nice unmolested (for the most part)
rifle.
and comments or observations are most welcome.
I think i am going to try and find an unnumbered lithgow bolt for this rifle.
enjoy.

Steif: The meaning of the "SC" marking is explained in this thread- a good read!

Nice looking rifle. I'm interested to see that the barrel and receiver on yours resemble my own "H-barrel" in that the metal finish is different (ie doesn't appear the pair was blued together after barrel installation). Sadly the buttstock on mine was heavily sanded by the same person that sawed off the forend.

Lithgow 1916
I see yours has the infamous circle with a ? in it like mine of which no one has been able to decipher the rack No. on my 1916 Lith "H" is 4721 be interesting to see if the barrel has a '37 date on it mine was changed then yours as stated is a 38 change does it have a H stamped into the top of the Butt wrist.
The 00007 No. is a bit beyond my knowledge the >S< is sold out of service, appears to still have the mag cut off, does it retain the windage rear sight.
Its the same military district as mine Western Australia
= 5MD

Yeah, this has the ?, This is sure interesting to me because of all the markings! yes, mine is dated 3.38, and has the large H on the top of the butt wrist. It does still have the cutoff, but no windage rear sight, but both the sight slide and base is mismatched. I also forgot to mention that it does not have the volley sights, they must have been eliminated before this was built in 1916. Such a neat mix of early and later features and many markings.. lol.
I did see the posting on 5MD rifles and I'm happy to join that club.
From what I have read, this rifle was lucky to have been kept in original condition (pretty much) being a J. Jovino import as it is.
Thanks!

Thanks! that explains the SC very well.
I was just lucky that this one remained pretty much unaltered over the years. I really like it. Lots of character in all these markings for sure.

Hi, I have a couple of variants in H rifles and this one looks very nice. Most people dont realize the significance of these and they get looked over.
Cheers
