Mystery Mauser?
I've been offered a Mauser that the seller claims is chambered in 30.06. I asked him what make/nationality, etc, he does not know. Had him send pics, which I am showing here, and it is kind of a head scratcher.
At first glance, you'd say 'VZ24'...which is what I thought. Seller states that there are zero markings on this rifle.
Muzzle is very short, darn near flush with the front sight base from what I can see.
The stock disc is '3006', which I believe is a rack number and not a caliber designation. Seller says he's never fired this rifle, and I suspect this rifle is in fact 7.92 (8 mm)
The numbers and 'suffix' are unusual to me...1511 M4 with a line running under this.
A star like marking on the front sight base screw.
This rifle looks as though it may have been refinished and reblued, but again, haven't seen it in person yet to determine.
Was hoping maybe the 'pattern' of numbers on the butt and number on the disc might give some idea as to what this is.
Thoughts welcome!

Agreed, any caliber designation would be on the barrelled system itself, nowhere else, so that it cannot be separated from the barrelled system.

The only reason to cut off the last 1/2" or so off a barrel, would have been that the muzzle was KO - damaged or widened. If, for instance, the cause was a plugged muzzle, then the distortion will have spread further back than one can tell with the naked eye.
For that reason alone, I would never buy such a rifle. Ruined as a collection piece and probably also as a shooter.

Pretty much thought that regarding the muzzle. There's too much weirdness about this thing..think I'll move on.

It could possibly be a Brazilian
M954. They were 30.06 and had a threaded muzzle for the use of a grenade launcher.
In the condition it's in I would consider it a shooter or sporterizing project. It already has a aftermarket bolt shroud and LH safety.
Unless someone has info about these being modified by Brazil or another country it might have been sold on to as parade or honor guard rifle. That's how I'd treat it.

Not exactly true as my Peruvian
30-06 is so marked on the stock, not the barrelled action. It is an official conversion and has the added groove in the receiver for the longer cartridge.

I have what is left of a 1950 FN Mauser, apparently made for Belgium
Armed Forces, no chambering marks on barrel or receiver, but it is , and was originally, chambered for 30-06, complete with a vertical notch at the rear of the front receiver ring.
