Giant Size Mess Tin
Another recent purchase is this giant size mess tin which I believe to be ex French
army. One would assume that it is intended to cater for a number of soldiers or a single soldier with an exceptionally large appetite.

Yes, French
...WW2 type issue. The thing on the top sticking out is for a wooden handle. Section kit, about 5 L.

Thanks Jim. I will take another pic with a "normal size" mess tin next to it, to give a better sense of size.

That was Goliath's mess tin before David took him out!

Does anyone know if these giant mess tins were intended to be carried by an individual, for the section, or would they have been carried in a vehicle, please? Thanks.

Here's the giant French
mess tin next to a, normal/averaged, sized mess tin and this instance it's a West German
mess tin, a bit like David and Goliath.

I have one and used it until recently as you can get two boil in the bag meals in them and enough water for a mug of tea afterwards.

"...an exceptionally large appetite..." Wouldn't be permitted. snicker.
That monster wouldn't be for the PBI. Even a section wouldn't carry something that big. Most likely a unit 'mess' thing. Chances are the thing is civilian 'camping' kit.
Spelling and Grammar count!
