Vintage military wood crate identification

I have recently acquired this wood crate , does anyone have any idea what was shipped in this box and where come from ??

Looks like a pretty standard ammo box. Some sort of short artillery round, maybe signal round since it looks like there was no projectile at the top.

I did have one that was externally similar but different inside which I eventually broke up and reused the wood. It also had similar end handles and markings and I think that mine may have been East German. I expect that many of the Eastern European states used similar ammo boxes during the Cold War period. I would say post WW2 and perhaps 1960's or 70's.

This one was bought in the USA in the 90s but I never managed to find the exact origin.

What is the diameter of the indentations? Perhaps 1" or 37mm signal flare casings/

the diameter is 60mm and the box 38 inches long

Possibly for grenades? Those circles look roughly the size (hard to say without having one on hand) for the little round canisters each grenade comes in. Not sure how other nations package them but it would make sense to me because it would leave the circle indents on the top and bottom, and you would want them held tightly.

If it's not grenades then surely it has to be for some sort of fuze?

nobody's know where the ajustable latch like this come from ?

60mm mortar perhaps; how deep is the case? Should be easy to find out if there was a 60mm round of about the right length with a more or less flat top.
