Best ammo for MN 91/30 PU Sniper?

    Hello all,
I have a Russianicon Mosin-Nagant 91/30 PU Sniper rifle on lay-away. I am looking forward to shooting it. While I know it will shoot anything, or shall I say make of ammo, in its calibre, I was wondering what is the best for it, for long range sniper accuracy? Like any country or sniper rifle system, the Russian snipers that used it were issued the best ammo for it, what we call "match" today. Any ideas, info or advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Freebooter

If you can find it use the brass case Yugoicon 180 grain projectile.

Thanks Skip. But that red ring around it scares me. Here's some ammo info from the US manual for it. It might be speaking strictly of Soviet manufacture, but check out what it says about the "Aircraft Machinegun" ammo with red laquer on primer. What does yours say on the base also:

    Notes from:

    MANUAL FOR SOVIET
    MOSIN-NAGANT

    MODELS OF

    1891 -- 1910 -- 1891/30 -- 1938 -- 1944

    RIFLES, CARBINES, &
    SNIPER RIFLES

    ORDI 7 - 101
    CHAPTER 2
    ORDNANCE CORPS MAY 1954

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    From Pg 5; Table 1:

Characteristics of 7.62mm Mosin-Nagant Action Rifles and Carbines:

    Sniper Rifle M1891/30

    1. Instrumental velocity at 78ft w/hvy ball: 2,660fps
    2. Max Sighting Range: 2,000 meters* (2,200yds)

    * For iron sights when scope is dismounted. Maximum sighting range for telescopic sights on this weapon is: PE Scope: 1,400 meters (1,540 yd.); PU Scope: 1.300 meters (1,420 yd.).
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    SECTION IV. AMMUNITION

    18. DESCRIPTION

Standard Soviet rifle ammunition (Fig. 33) is of 7.62mm caliber (cal. .30), has a rimmed bottlenecked case, and is 3.03 inches of length. Ground machinegun ammunition, which is identical in appearance except for color markings, may be used in rifles and carbines; however, only the light ball M1908 and heavy ball M1930 are recommended for this purpose by the Soviet Army. No color markings are found on the light bullet M1908 but the heavy bullet M1030 has a yellow tip.
NOTE: ShKAS Aircraft machinegun ammunition should not be used in rifles since it may damage the extractor. ShKAS ammunition can be identified by te Russianicon symbol III (Sh) stamped on the base, in addition to the stamped symbol, ShKAS rounds sometimes have red shellac coloring on the primer.

Soviet Rifle Ammunition (Light Ball and Heavy Ball)

    19. Packaging

The packaging methods (how many to a clip and to a box, etc) I skipped due to the fact that we know how they are when we buy them.

There are no color on the packaging of the light bullet M1908; however, the heavy bullet M1930 has a yellow stripe on both the inner metal and the outer wooden packing boxes.
(It has an illustration of a wooden ammo box showing all the markings and what all they mean, who made them, where, type, lot, factory, and year, propellant, calibre, number of rounds, bullet type, etc.)

Freebooter, I don't believe it applies to the Yugoicon. I have fired many rounds of Yugo with positive results. All the Yugo rifle ammo that I have shots has the red water proof sealent.

Hey Skip, I believe your are right in that. I was looking over that manual and it was specifically talking about Sovieticon manufacture ammo..
    Thanks

My Mosin Nagants like Albanian ammo. It may be difficult to find now. On the commercial side, two of my rifles shoot minute of angle with Wolf 200 gr sp......chris3

Mine really likes Prvi 182 grain ball.
BTW, the Yugoicon primer seal is orange. In addition, ShKas ammo will not hurt any weapon chambered for 7.62x54R, as it is not loaded any differently than any other Sovieticon load. It does however, have a thicker web to withstand violent MG extraction, as a broken case head on an aircraft MG is essentially unfixable.

SO thats what that is. Good to know because I have shot thousands of these rounds through some of my Mosins.

And what do you know...it didn't hurt anything! Like I said, it's not loaded differently, it has a staked primer and a thicker internal web.
