I am looking for an example (pictures) of a Long Branch No4 rifle with Naval Service markings.

The only ones I ever saw that were distinct were the old Line Throwers. Large white LT on the butt and as I seem to remember, no sights fitted as a precaution, so said at the time, to prevent anyone stupidly aiming one from the shoulder while firing the ship-to-ship line rod.

The navy had some old tatty examples that would occasionally come through our big Base Workshop. To be honest, some of them (they came from RN and ex RN RNZR, RAN ships) were in truly poor condition that we would scrap in normal circumstances. But we couldn't torch NOD stores such as Lanchesters etc so we had to send them back to Sembawang for destruction/disposal. Sorry to go off at a tangent........

Is the "N" located on the left side near the top of the receiver by the action or on the wrist above the serial #?

Edit: I have requested a picture to help me (et al) identify the marking.

I expected N^Z, however it is only the "N" on the wrist socket above the serial #.

Here is a NOS 1950 LongBranch LT. No "N" stamp.

Your LongBranch does look like it was in Naval Service as the "N" style is correct but for whom I cannot say.

I have been searching this site and the internet for relevant examples (something to do during my son's ice hockey practice :-).

Was only able to find a few examples of the Serif N on British Rifles and one potentially questionable example on a Long Branch.

I have now also purchased the rifle.

At the risk of pulling this great thread off-course, an insertion regarding Royal Canadian Navy markings on arms, vs. RN markings.

Below is a picture of my RCN-marked Colt New Service. Markings are C ^ N. SMLEs have been seen with this marking as well, but I've not seen a No. 4 so marked.

I can't say that I ever saw or noticed a Navy No4 with a N for Navy marking and that's all they were armed with in the Far East (RM Commando excepted of course). Nor Brens, Lanchesters or their old 38's now that I think about it
