I'm pretty sure it's been apart. The screw heads are all boggered up. The tang screw is missing but more importantly where's the recoil lug? Don't fire it until you source a new one. Somebody filled the drain hole forward of the trigger guard too.
Others will be along who know more about these.

The only screw that looks really buggered is the barrel band. I'm not gonna touch the rest. Also I believe on this series they did block the drain hole. I did some quick searching and that seems to be standard for the 9th series.

$425 does seem a bit high considering all of the missing parts and the ground mum. If you figure $75 for the bayonet you have roughly $350 into a gun that is missing pieces (screw behind trigger guard, the metal piece that keeps the cleaning rod from sliding into the stock, recoil lug) not to mention the screws that are buggered (from the pictures it looks like two screws have been messed with while one is just missing). To replace them and source the missing parts you'll have even more money into it and even though it is a Izawa Jukyo I think you'll be at the high end of retail after all is said and done. Did you use the missing parts to help negotiate the rifle down any?

No surprise, I'm talking out my arse when it comes to T99's. Did you know about the lug when you bought it?

It's hard to say if it's honestly missing those parts. The 9th series for this arsenal doesn't actually have the metal front piece for the front band, at least on multiple examples I've seen online. I'm assuming the screw that's missing from the trigger guard was removed, but who's to say for sure. Same with the recoil lug, though it's entirely possible it was removed too. This particular series seems to have alot of variable. The gentleman I bought it from was very knowledgeable in Japanese
rifles and was selling this one because he already had a mumed example. But the screws still are staked as far as it seems.

On second though I decided to give one of them a turn and found out they aren't staked anymore, even though it seems so. I may be in this more than I thought. Oh well.

The recoil lug WAS removed by someone AFTER the rifle was built and issued. The rifle was not built without it, it's missing, you need a new one if your going to shoot the rifle. Without one all the recoil impulse is taken up by the action screws which leads to a split stock in very short order.
Doesn't matter, 1st series, 9th series, 100th series, it's a vital design feature.

That mum on the rifle means it was fully functional and accepted by the Army. It is missing parts, every screw head that I can see minus those screwed into the wood show evidence of being removed. Having transitional parts really means nothing special other than it being a recognized variation. The guy sold you a story. You overpaid. A complete ground mum rifle is worth about $300 in todays market with many being available for even less. Yours is missing parts.

Appreciate the input. I've had bad luck with buying Substitute Standard rifles before, so I thought this was a good buy finally, haha! At the show it was kind hard to tell that the screws had been messed with. My other Type 99 has the screws messed with and it's much more apparent.
I like the transitional features of the rifle, so that's a plus in my book, even if it's not anything really uncommon.
Does the recoil bolt need to be removed with the rifle taken out of the stock? And can anyone think of a reason why it would be? I'm just curious as to why someone even did it in the first place but didn't modify anything else. The missing parts seem to be a total of about $10, which I don't think is too big a deal. With the bayonet being figured in I'm probably about $50 or so over the retail mentioned about.
