Hi
I have recently acquired L42A1 'A32562'. I'm assured it's on the list .
Interestingly perhaps is that it has an 'N' stamped below the serial number and above the 'TR'. It looks like it was stamped at about the same time as all the other pre-L42 stamps. I have read that in WW1 this might have indicated that the rifle was a 'Navy' issued rifle. Could this mean that my rifle was originally a Navy issued No4T? Is that likely? Or does it indicate something less romantic? Or something entirely different? Or nothing at all? I can't find a reference to an 'N' stamp on an L42. Is anyone able to decipher it?
Thank you.

David,
L42A1 Serial number A32562 was in a batch of 13 sent to Donnington on the 7th February 1973. N could be attributed to North America but I'll leave someone else to answer definatively

It is stamped as a '72 conversion so that makes sense. Thank you again.

If the N looks like it has been there a long time it may be from WW2 & indicate as the OP first surmised, that the rifle was Naval issue. This doesn't mean it ended up on a ship, rather that it may have been issued to a Royal Marine commando unit. I've owned several similarly marked 4T's over the years, & at least one L42.
