1891 Argentine Carbine

Picked this up at an Albuquerque pawn shop last week; looks like the Cavalry Model, as there is a sling point, and no bayonet provision. Wood has been carved, but I believe all the metal is there.

Got brass and bullets from Graf, but I'll slug the barrel and order some hard-cast 180 gr RN style bullets in case the chamber doesn't like the 150 gr BTFMJ I picked up with the brass.

Sucks that the wood was carved, however it is pretty hard to find a M91 with the crest still on it (even if it is pretty worn).

Pretty worn, a bit carved, but all metal is there, and numbers match so far. A good project for a shooter. 4-groove barrel slugs to .311, so I'll get some Montana Bullet Works 0.312" 180 gr LRN GCs and work on some <2300 fps loads.

then, gotta see how it shoots with FMJs. Thinking I may go with 4064 for the LRN, and maybe BLC2 for the FMJs. More reading to do!!

jamie5070: There is some carving in that area, but I don't see any dowel repairs. Yeah. My older eyes don't like the sights, either. Will be experimenting with eyeglass mounted diopters , inverted reading lenses, etc to see what helps

Why in the world do people do that to a perfectly good stock? It's not like you're inproving it in any measurable way and frankly it looks ugly as sin.

NFC. But no hack saw effort, and repro stocks are cheap if it shoots and is worth keeping

I recall seeing a Gew88 Carbine. Someone had carved a skull and crossbones un the buttstock. It looked horrible.

From looking at the first picture it looks like there is a hole in the stock like those seen on the artillery carbine conversions. They are fun to shoot but my eyes have a hard time with the rear sight notch.
