Is this type I band real?

I'm in need of a real RMC early band, but not that familiar with them.
I can't see the top, to look at how many welds.
Also looks as though the inner ring is recessed quite a ways back.

    Any thoughts?
Got my hopes up.....but I can handle the truth !

    Charlie,

Looking in War Baby page 399 they talk about a UR band, but under the contractors page 403 they don't list one.

The font looks a bit off to me. I don't see where this guy has sold other carbine items, low feedback.

    Jim

    Thanks Jim,
I see in Riesch that UR is listed...but it doesn't state on the band or swivel.
I see this seller has a few other carbine parts he's selling,
eBay Seller: clpp: Collectibles items on eBay.com

    Maybe parting one out.....?

    Thanks again

I think Jim is correct in that the bands were marked and not the swivels.

    Hi Charlie,

Ebay has made the photos difficult to copy. I had to first save it as a MS word photo and some details are lost here. I'll send you a small pdf to your email and you can see better details. The ends of the lines are rounded and the left bottom leg of the 'R' has a round area the goes to the right.

It looks like it's been laser etched to me. Ask the seller to send you a jpeg so you can see for certain.

    True,
The band on the Rock 0la I had was marked 'MR' and the swivel not marked at all.

The amount of recess on the inner band scares me.....without even seeing the top welds.

    I appreciate everyones help.

Side view of the screw shows it is a fake.

I spotted this fake right away, but asked this clpp guy if this was a genuine band, just to see what he'd say -- I was amazed that he replied it was on a gun his father brought back from the war!

So I wrote him back the following: "Hello --

There are at least three clear signs that this is NOT a genuine WW2 vintage USGI barrel band: (1)Rock-Ola did NOT put the MR or UR marking on the swivel; only the band itself was marked -- someone thought they were real clever with a hand stamp! (2) The end of the top tab on the band should NOT be a full-tangent semicircle; the genuine band had a partial-arc end on the upper tab. (3)The top of the swivel screw on your band has an improper shape -- difficult to describe in words, but instantly recognizable to any knowledgeable collector. The genuine screw has a pinched, double-concave contour just like the shorter screw on the Type 2 and Type 3 bands. Other more subtle indications include incorrect metal thickness and radius of the edges of the swivel, which are clear when compared with a known genuine item.
I suspect that the band (or the entire gun that it was removed from) was represented to your father as genuine when he acquired it, and he was not experienced enuf to recognize the differences."

The seller never responded to me, did not post my message on his listing as he could have, and allowed the auction to go to completion for $132.50!

After the auction ended, I registered a complaint with eBay for this guy selling fake stuff; also sent eBay all communication between clpp and me.

    Hope they smack him!

    Ray
