Magazine spring

I was working on a rifle and proceeded to look through the magazine springs that I have (1903s) for one 1917 spring that I was pretty sure I had in there. I can't tell the difference, they all look the same, are they, or do I no longer have the 1917 spring that I thought I had?

The springs are pretty much the same. However, the real M1917 springs will be stamped R, W or E. You will see a fair number of M1917 followers in M1903's. They are very slightly different.

Steve is right they will swap out, other then the markings, the 17 springs have a goldish hue to them.

Well, I found one with an R on it, but it really looks like an 03A3 spring, not like the 1917 or 03 springs.

An M1917 magazine spring has C-shaped bends and is marked "R", "E", or "W". An M'03-A3 magazine spring has U-shaped bends and is either marked "R" or is unmarked.

John, isn't it also true that the Remington "R" stamp on the M1917 spring has serifs, and the "R" for the M1903A3 spring does not? This has been my observation, in addition to the shapes of the "kinks." Thanks, and best regards, KarlKW

Yes! That is indeed true. Remington M1917 springs are marked with a large serifed "R" whereas Remington M'03-A3 springs are marked with a very small block "R". In addition to having C-shaped bends, Remington M1917 springs also have a rounded tip on the top end.
